The Birdie is a compact, simple belay device with assisted brake for belaying a first-climber or over the "top rope" (on a fish). The whole construction of the BEAL Birdie is metal. The internal connecting parts + dynamic cam and friction hammer are made of stainless steel for increased durability. The rope passes through the axis of the belay device - so the rope does not twist when rubbing over the edge as with other manufacturers. BEAL Birdie is compatible with simple dynamic ropes from 8.5 mm diameter (BEAL Opera) up to 10.5 mm (BEAL TopGun). The belay device is secured with a connecting carabiner only after the rope has been inserted. Therefore, it is not possible to open the belay device in any way during operation.
